My oldest girl is an avid reader. She devours books! Finding new books for her can sometimes be a challenge. She tends to lean towards fantasy genre, which is great! Her dear’ol parents love that genre :)
Her most recent beloved series is called The Last Dragon Chronicles by Chris D’Lacey.
Now, my girl really gets into her books! Whatever she is reading about, she will want to research the topic, learn more about it, collect, draw, or somehow create said character/object/etc. In this instance, it’s all about dragons!
Here is her clay dragon that she created:
Isn’t he cute? :)
We’ve gone through a cat phase, mermaids, aliens, animals both big and small! I love how she totally dives into her books.
Do you have any good book recommendations for a nearly 10 year old?
Hello, My husband and I are seriously thinking of homeschooling our two children, ages 9 and almost 7. Our 9 year old is a boy who reads constantly. He is just finishing up the “Lord of the Rings” books (Hobbit, Lord of the RIngs, Two Towers and Return of the King). He really loved them. He also liked the Red Pyramid by Rick Riorden(?) and ALL the Lemony Snicket books. It is tough finding books at his age level and his reading level. Most books for boys are crap and I am starting to find out that most new books for girls are crap. Any advice you could give on homeschooling would be appreciated. Do you follow a plan? Do you do all the teaching or do you go to co-ops or tutors? We live in NY. Have a nice evening.
Hello there Liz!
I hear you on books for girls being, as you put it, crap! It is hard to find decent books for avid readers. Thanks for the posted recommendations!
In regards to your question -I don’t really follow a particular plan. It took me a couple of years to getting my bearing and find what works for us. The key is to not lock yourself into anything and allow yourself to change plans if you see something not quite working out for you and your children. There’s no right or wrong way of homeschooling, but rather finding what works best for you and your kids. It’s all about trial and error.
I do actually do all the teaching for every subject. We have joined a co-op to supplement but don’t heavily depend on it to teach the bulk of a subject.
There was one subject that I needed help teaching; math. Which is why we use ALEKS.com to help with that. I’m sure the older my girl gets, the more advanced the topics will become, so we’ll need to re-evaluate how to teach said subjects. I’m not too worried because there’s a lot of resources out there to help us. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to email me :)
Good luck in your homeschooling journey!
